Fred Brathwaite (Fab 5 Freddy) is an American visual artist, filmmaker, and Hip-Hop pioneer, widely recognized as one of the key architects of the street art movement. Emerging in New York’s downtown underground scene in the late 1970s as a graffiti artist, Freddy became a bridge between the uptown rap scene and the downtown art community. As a member of the Brooklyn-based graffiti crew The Fabulous 5, he helped paint entire subway car sides and gradually transitioned into the broader art world.

Freddy collaborated with underground filmmaker Charlie Ahearn on the influential 1983 film Wild Style, which highlighted emerging Hip-Hop culture and featured artist Lee Quiñones. He co-produced the film, composed its original score, and appeared in a leading role. In the late 1980s, Freddy became the first host of the landmark Hip-Hop music video show Yo! MTV Raps and directed numerous iconic rap videos and films throughout the 1990s. Today, Fab 5 Freddy remains a cultural icon and a pioneering force in both Hip-Hop and street art.
